Why Labor Day?

Friday, August 14th, 2009

GoHuman.com launches in just a few short weeks on Labor Day. I thought I’d share some of the significance behind why we chose Labor Day for our launch.

Labor Day is often regarded as a day of rest and parades.  This one will be remembered.  At a time when hard-working people struggle every day to make ends meet, people certainly need respite. After the parties and parades, it will be time to Change the way your world works and we’ll earn the celebration.

2009 marks the 100th anniversary of Labor Sunday, offering the perfect time to reflect on why the labor movement began and how we’ve lost sight of what it was intended to achieve.  The past century has seen governments cater to the whims of super-powerful corporations that are completely out of touch with people, sustainability, and social responsibility.  GoHuman.com will embrace the visionary ideals of the labor movement by inspiring and empowering independent businesses to take back the local markets and provide unmatched service to their communities.

Transition Towns

Here’s one model for banding people together in local communities to effect change. A Transition Town begins with a Transition Initiative, which is a community (lots of examples here) working together to look Peak Oil and Climate Change squarely in the eye and address this BIG question:

“For all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly increase resilience (to mitigate the effects of Peak Oil) and drastically reduce carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of Climate Change)?”

If you haven’t seen this yet, check out Annie Leonard’s Story of Stuff. An insightful animation tells the story of the global supply chain.
