Reigniting Your Flame

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

We often remind ourselves how wonderful it would be to be young again. Children love and enjoy the planet they live and play on. They reinvent themselves every day. Their spirit is everywhere – flowing through the air.  Crack a window open and hear their shouts of joy, laughter and (on occasion) frustration, next door, down the road, at the school playground. “Hey! You’re not the boss of me!” Or, “You can’t catch me!”

In a place of business full of adults, the shouts of joy are nonexistent. Where did they go? What happened? We grow up and decide we’re no longer creative, imaginative or extraordinary and so we quit. The spirit has gone into complete hiding, waiting only for a dramatic outside event to fire it back up. However, for many of us, quitting becomes too painful to live with. We don’t have to wait for such a crisis, we just need to find a way to wake up and live again, create again, dance again and love again.

Life is an eternal internal flame. We can reignite it and make it burn brighter than ever, if the will and commitment to do so is present. It all comes down to how we perceive ourselves and others. We can reignite that flame by finding the words to think, the words to say, and even the words to sing, if we want. Suddenly our life improves dramatically. Every moment is a new beginning and a fresh moment.

“At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.”  ~Albert Schweitzer

*Speaking of “reigniting flames,” stay tuned for more information to be posted here on my blog, about an elite women’s success group a colleague and I are starting called, “Ignite-Creating the Fire for Women in Business.” A launch date of April 1, 2011, is tentatively scheduled to kick-off our program…More information to follow.

Happy Father’s Day

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Fathers are as different and unique as snowflakes.  More so – as they range across the full saint to sinner spectrum.  But we can all acknowledge that without a father we wouldn’t be here.  And the majority of people on the planet no doubt have very positive feelings related to their father, because of what our fathers represent to us.

For me Father’s day has taken on a much deeper significance over the last 32 months.  From the moment my wife told me I was going to be a daddy my life was transformed.  Zoe, who’s name is Greek for Life – helps me understand its meaning.  Being her daddy offers the inspiration needed to move mountains that need moving in creating a better world.

And that is the tie-in to GoHuman.com, which seeks to Change the way the world works – for the better.

Make Green, Recycle Your Talents!

Friday, January 29th, 2010

recycle-logoI was on Ted.com the other day, listening to Seth Godin talk about tribes and more specifically about the dynamics of starting a movement. In this talk he spoke about how it is important to find a group that needs something and connect them with an idea that will address their needs. During this economic recession I have been bombarded with requests to forward resumes and requests for job leads from readers of my blog and listeners of my radio show. As much as I would love to help every single one of my supporters, I simply did not have the resources to make an impact.

So I started thinking about creating something that would be a resource for those people,  looking for that new job and after some deep thought… Latino Community Info was born. Latino Community Info is a job board that I created to address the needs of readers looking for jobs. Now so far I have heard 3 great success stories about how people connected with new employers, and more specifically those looking for bilingual candidates. It was great to hear that something we did had an impact on someone’s life but there is still many people who are either unemployed, underemployed or simply not working in a job that makes them happy. Even those who have good jobs look to work a side job that helps them either pay the bills or allow them to work in a space that is more in line with their passions and then it CLICKED…

Many people I know in the arts community have side jobs that reflects something they love to do and do well. What they normally do is find a single opportunity. I thought to myself, this is something that ANYONE can do. I was reading a great article by Randall S. Hansen, Ph.D on moonlighting that suggested that the following are the reasons why people work second jobs;
Reason for Multiple Jobs Percent of all Multiple Job-Holders
Meet expenses; pay off debt 27.8
Earn extra money 35.4
Get new experience; build up a business 4.6
Enjoys work of second job 17.4
Other reasons 12.5

Do you have a side job? Do you fit into any of these categories? Do you have a talent or are you interested in learning something you are passionate about? Would you like to be in a position to utilize those talents and make some extra money or work towards some new kind of career opportunities?

If you said yes to any of these questions…there is a new community that can help you connect with people that need what you have to offer. That community is called GoHuman, a marketplace for local services that is focused on quality and excellence. It is a great place to Recycle your talents and put them to work for you.

I found out about GoHuman a while back when a friend invited me to enter a video contest telling him what I loved about being Latino. To make a long story short, I actually lost the contest (after a hell of a run) but I gained something a lot more valuable…a unique opportunity to promote myself on a website that has such a great philosophy about thinking globally but acting locally. The unique value proposition is that unlike other classified services it has a social component similar to what you would see in Linked In, where people can endorse you and share your products and services with their friends on over 30 different social networks.

Many of us have talents that can be utilized to have a viable side job that does both pay the bills and allow us to test the waters in a potential career move. I work a job in corporate America but I blog and consult in social media because it is my passion to network and connect with others. I actively seek companies and organizations that will pay me to show them what I have learned in 14 years as a webmaster / blogger / social media enthusiast.

I use GoHuman so that I can find people locally that can use my services instead of a mega classifieds “list” where there is no sense of community, nobody that can effectively endorse me to their network and where I will have to fight through hundreds of spam emails just to get a single opportunity that is viable.

This is a place where musicians can become instructors, educators can become tutors, poets can become editors, counselors can become life coaches…you get the drift? The possibilities are endless.

Are you ready to use your skills today and put them to work for you?

“A journey of a million miles begins with the first step…”

Go Reinhard! Winner #12 of a GoHuman Flip Cam!

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Congrats to Reinhard Klett of Morristown, TN, who won our 12th Flip HD video camera by posting his business on GoHuman.com. Reinhard can help you get a home if you’ve had trouble with conventional financing.

When asked why he chose GoHuman.com, Reinhard said:

“Our society has become increasingly mobile and we tend to move often. Especially when we are new to an area, it is great to have a website we can go to and look for a service that has a good reputation. This way we can get a service done often much more reasonably than having to go through a national franchise, where a lot of the money is siphoned off by some corporation far away, which does not really add any value to the service I am getting.

“Here is a picture of my family Reinhard, Emilee, David and Daniel.”

Congrats to Ramon Ramirez for making the winning Being Latino video

Monday, December 21st, 2009

The most rewarding part of building GoHuman.com is meeting people who share our vision for economic sustainability and cultural expression. Being Latino, led by Lance Rios, is just such a group. We’ve met engaging people beyond those who shared videos and look forward to working with them in the future.

We had the pleasure of sponsoring a contest with Being Latino that asked their members to submit videos telling the world why they love Being Latino. The responses were inspiring and you can view the video that won a GoHuman Flip cam below, submitted by Ramon Ramirez.

We tracked down our 7th Flip Camera winner!

Monday, November 16th, 2009

We had a bit of a time delivering the good news to our 7th Flip HD video camera winner a couple of weeks ago, but persisted thanks to all the great help Sasha Veljic has given to GoHuman.com. Sasha had a lot to say about GoHuman, so I’ll just let him say it!

“When I was introduced to GoHuman.com, its values and vision attracted my attention and admiration.  Primarily it is the vision of a better marketplace that is helpful to small businesses.  More and more people are interconnecting through the Internet.  That gives a chance to everyone.  The fact that GoHuman is built from the bottom up, with no top elite wielding power and reveling in greed is the principle factor that drew me in.

“I live in an area that has been affected by conflicts resulting in tremendous economic catastrophe that has plagued our nation for almost 20 years and continues due to current corruption and lack of legal state.  Living in strained economic conditions with many limitations and lack of commodities freely enjoyed in the West lead me to the conclusion that Internet-based small business venture is the best opportunity for me and others.  Besides, among GoHuman founders there are individuals who never cheated me in our past business relations, so GoHuman is a continuation of honest, altruistic business ventures with proven true business people that I share the same vision with.

“Internet here is not cheap.  However, it is a window to the world.  GoHuman has the best possible potential to provide all participants with equality on the market place.  Each user is able to form a list (circle) of reliable co-workers that can be better coordinated across local areas and the entire world.

“I believe I have caught the vision of GoHuman since its very inception.  A good cause cannot have a bad effect.  GoHuman values are timeless and its success certain.  My vision is to be a part of a successful worldwide business movement that will also cause changes in East Europe.”

Thanks Sasha! Beautifully said.
